EndNote (Thomson ResearchSoft) is a common application used by many
academic radiologists to organize references and citations for publications
and many other forms of scholarly work. Under normal circumstances, EndNote
can be linked with other word-processing applications such as Word (Microsoft)
to further automate the citation process. With this software linkage, users
can easily extract or update references between Word and EndNote without
changing the citation database itself. This feature is critical when multiple
users share the same citation database (e.g., for a research grant
preparation).

Last month, we purchased an EndNote site license for both Mac (Apple
Computer) and PC, and our radiology users requested installations on multiple
computers. In most cases, installation was simple and straightforward, but for
some PC computers, an error resulted when launching EndNote from Word. After a
Web search, the error was identified as an add-ins conflict between EndNote
and another program, SnagIt (TechSmith), which is an application used for
capturing screen images for teaching files
(Fig. 1). To resolve the
conflict, SnagIt add-ins must be removed from Word. The task for removing this
add-in is simple, and the process steps are documented at the EndNote support
Website [1]. Similar
information is also available by searching the TechSmith support Website

(Fig. 2). Note that the fix
requires only the removal of the SnagIt add-in from Word, rather than
uninstalling the entire SnagIt application.
At first, this appeared to be a simple software incompatibility issue; but
in further interviews with the affected users, we discovered the following
interesting findings.
All these users had the same impression that SnagIt is a necessary tool for
screen capture. Some of our new faculty members had experienced the same error
at their former institutions as well. And more interestingly, most of these
users learned the use of SnagIt directly—or indirectly—from an
article by Halsted et al. [3]
published in the April 2002 issue of AJR. The article proposed a
stream-lined client-server-based solution (SnagIt) for capturing and storing
interesting images for teaching files in a secure PACS network in which no
other alternatives were available for collecting such images. Unfortunately,
the use of SnagIt in office computers may accidentally decouple the link
between EndNote and Word.
For those who use SnagIt solely for capturing screen images, we suggest
using the builtin screen-capturing function—that is, press the Print
Screen key on the PC keyboard, and then use the Paste function in most desktop
applications (e.g., Adobe PhotoShop, Microsoft PowerPoint, and Microsoft
Paint) to transfer and save the screen image. Alternatively, use the Alt +
Print Screen keys to capture only the active window instead of the entire
screen. Similar functions are also available for Mac computers (e.g., Apple +
shift + 3 and Apple + shift + 4 keys).
In conclusion, affected users can now resolve the linkage issue between
EndNote and Word without affecting the SnagIt functions for screen capture.
For users who do not own SnagIt but need screen captures, using the built-in
keyboard functions will produce equivalent results.
