I read with great interest the Centennial Article commentary by Lynn
Steinbach [1] in the June issue
of AJR, "MRI in the Detection of Malignant Infiltration of Bone
Marrow." My intention in writing this letter is to correct several
historical inaccuracies. Dr. Steinbach states in her commentary that
"...one of the first articles to discuss the use of MR for the detection
of metastatic disease in the bone marrow was published in 1986." She
later states, "Around the time of submission of the article by Daffner
[2], a few articles came out in
the AJR concerning MRI of the bone marrow.... Other journals were not
yet publishing articles on MRI of the bone marrow."
I very respectfully wish to draw attention to an article of mine
[3] that appeared in
Radiology in 1984, 2 years earlier than the articles referenced by
Dr. Steinbach [1]. This
article, "Magnetic Resonance Imaging of Bone Marrow Disease in
Children" [3], clearly
presented images of MRI-identified bone abnormality in children with
osteogenic sarcoma, leukemia, and neuroblastoma and concluded that these
abnormalities were caused by tumor within the bone marrow.
