Because the manuscript reviewers help decide what passes muster at the AJR, each manuscript received by the Journal is forwarded anonymously to two knowledgeable reviewers for their opinions concerning the worthiness of papers for publication or the reviewers' suggestions for improvement or both. The Journal receives approximately 2075 manuscripts annually, of which fewer than 800 (38%) are published. Our reviewers perform this service without compensation and with no recognition except for this acknowledgment.

The dedication of our reviewers is largely responsible for the exceedingly short mean time (approximately 4 weeks) between submission of manuscripts and notification of authors about the initial editorial decision. Initial editorial decisions are reached so quickly only because reviewers agree to judge manuscripts within 2 weeks, an enormous commitment considering the extent of their other responsibilities.
